A truck and trailer that crashed on the highway from Blenheim to Kaikōura has spilled molasses onto the road.
Emergency services were alerted to the crash at the Ellerton overbridge, south of Kēkerengū, about 11.15am on Monday.
A police spokesperson said the truck and trailer unit had reportedly rolled and there were reports of molasses on State Highway 1.
Molasses is a syrup derived from sugar cane, often used as a sweetener, as well as in soil fertilizer, cattle feed and yeast fermentations.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said crews from Kaikōura, Ward and Seddon were called to the crash.
The occupants of both vehicles had got out of the wreckage safely and appeared to be uninjured, the spokesperson said.
Crews were managing a spill at the site but there were no hazardous chemicals involved, the spokesperson said.
Waka Kotahi NZTA issued an advisory about noon that the highway was closed near its intersection with Valhalla Rd.
Motorists were advised to delay their journey or use an alternative route at this time and to follow directions of emergency services on site.
